>> in the news this saturday morning the dumbarton bridge is closed and will be all weekend long for retrofit work. we will update their overall progress. developing news in afghanistan right now. two suicide bombers used a base used by nato troops this morning. dozens are dead and dozens more injured. good morning. i'm terry mcsweeney. hope your labor day is off to a good start. let's check in with lisa argen for the weather on this three day weekend. >> good morning, everything. official sunrise in 40 minutes. here is mount tam. you see the marine layer.

we are looking at a fairly uniform start with numbers in the 50s. by noontime it will be partly sunny and numbers climbing through the 60s. so the sunshine starts in the try valley, work being its way westward. by 4:00 notice the afternoon highs, pretty cool. count on plenty of clouds there with mild numbers, just near 80 inland. once again, temperatures will be below average. the fog moves quickly across the bay again tonight, but the wind shift tomorrow is going to allow for earlier clearing. a big warmup on the way. terry. >> thanks very much, lisa. we begin with breaking news in concord. contra costa fire investigator district is trying to determine the cause of a fire that burned two homes. started about 3:00 this morning on the 1700 block of margo drive off concord boulevard. firefighters had it under control in less than an hour. no reports of injuries. we will bring you more as the information comes bail.

the dumbarton bridge is closed this entire labor day weekend. take a look at the last cars crossing the dumbarton bridge between menlo park and fremont last night. about 30,000 vehicles a day cross the bridge on any given weekend. it's shut down for seismic retrofitting. and it's going to reopen 5:30 tuesday morning. they will install new steal bearings to give it more flexibility when the next big quake hits. >> it's two disks and they slide over each other. it gives the bridge up to four feet of movement in any direction. >> alternate routes include the bay bridge, the san mateo bridge and the south bray you have the 101-237 880 loop. and another traffic alert this weekend. this one is san francisco. fremont street is closed from howard to mission treat street right where drivers get off the bay bridge.

a detour is provided around the project for the new transit bay terminal. fremont remains closed there until tuesday morning. the exclusive waze reports our closers this weekend. you can find it on our website and download it and become a traffic spotter. new this morning a developing story in central afghanistan where the taliban is claiming responsibility for two suicide bombings at an afghan military base this morning. a dozen people are confirmed dead, including four afghan police officers. no nato troops were killed but some are among the injured. one bomber was on foot, followed by the second attacker who detonated a truck bomb. fifty-seven others injured, mostly civilians. in a separate action the pentagon says u.s. drones fired a missile and killed five in pakistan who were taliban officials. an outpouring of support for a san jose firefighters who collapsed on the job. it was the quick thinking of colleagues that saved his life. the 42-year-old suffered a massive heart attack fighting a

fire at st. patrick's cathedral. more from karina rusk. >> san jose firefighters are a family and today they know they saved a life of one of their own. >> he did not have a pulse and was not breathing at that point. i initiated cpr. >> firefighter frank ryan suffered a heart attack yesterday after helping knock down a fire at st. patrick's cathedral. the 42-year-old firefighter paramedic has been with the department for 15 years. captain brian indicot is one of his many friends and works with him at station one. >> we do this every day. it's what we do. but when it's one of your own, he goes down, you know, i don't think you can be prepared for that. >> not only are san jose firefighters supporting the family, two brothers and a sister, but they are getting support from across the area. >> i have gotten phone calls from san francisco, oakland, santa clara,

agencies of that had very tragic line of duty deaths over the last few years. and they are calling us now to say you were there for us. >> members of st. patrick's cathedral are grieving their own loss. it could take months to rebuild the church which has a congregation of 16,000. the vast majority of parishioners are vietnamese and seeing the damage at this sacred place is difficult. >> that is the image i felt right here. you know, what is this? is this vietnam or what? but it's really bad. it's just an awful feeling. >> the range of emotions could be more intense at regional medical. there is gratitude from the colleague and his life and hope for recovery. >> a tragic situation that ended up going down inside there, but he's a fighter. he's fighting for his life right now. we just hope that he pulls through. >> and firefighters will continue to keep an around-the-clock vigil, hoping for some good news. it has been a difficult august. earlier this month the

department mourned the loss of a 41-year-old fire captain, jose martinez died fighting a very aggressive form of cancer. in san jose, karina rusk, abc7 news. >> this morning police are hunting for a sexual predator who attacked a woman in san jose. this happened sunday just after 7:00 p.m. near south baskim parkmore avenue. this morning police have released a sketch of the suspect. he's is described as about 5'7", between 35 and 45 years of age, broad shoulders and a dark complexion. his hair was cut in a flat-top style. after a search, san jose hasn't seen any homicides for a week. the police chief is taking credit. it was one of the most violent stretches in san jose's history, 8 lives in 23 days. since august 23rd they transferred officers, authorized overtime and flooded gang known areas with police, making more than two dozen arrests. they say the efforts are working.

butt mario, superintendent of the mayor's gang prevention das being force, says the reason may be even more elusive. he said don't assume there was less violence because there were no homicides. it could be because the ballet missed by half an inch. this morning the owners of an iconic san francisco italian restaurant in north beach have served their last meal after following six decades in business. ceasar's restaurant served family style meals for the past 56 years. they closed last night. more than five hundred finers -- diners enjoyed one last meal and came to say good-bye. they said they were forced because of economy. he said the locals who kep it going have moved away, and others have aged. or they aren't going out to eat as often. >> i can't afford to pay

>> updating you on breaking news. contra costa county firefighters are trying to determine the cause of the fire that burned two homes that started about 3:00 this morning. as you see there was a lot of blames and a lot of smoke on the 1700 block of margo drive off concord boulevard. fights had it under control in about 50 minutes. no reports of injuries as a result. we will bring you more information as soon as we can get a hold of it. on tuesday. officials plan to spray parts of mountain view where mosquitoes tested positive for west nile virus. it will start at 11:00 p.m. and it will take several hours to

complete. some mosquitoes collected on thursday tested positive for the virus. information packets about the fogging will be didn'ted to residents in the treatment area today and again tomorrow and again that fogging is scheduled to begin late tuesday night. also new this morning a us coast guard cutter deployed from its home port in alameda sense march will return home about 90 men's from right now. the cutter's return follows a 161-day, 38,000 nautical mile deployment in the western pacific and southeast asia where it conducted operations with the u.s. navial forces. the cutter is named for an an admiral who was credited for mission. the cal bears take the field this morning at their newly

renovated stadium. we got an inside look at the extreme makeover fans can look forward to at today's season opener. >> reporter: the final screws are in place, the turf is ready and the menu is set. 89 years after memorial stadium opened, it's reopening with a $321 million renovation and seismic retrofit. >> we are testing out the systems, the scoreboard, the sound, preparing the food and beverage, getting things set up to host 63,000 folks. >> 63,000, that's 9,000 fewer than the old stadium seating allowed, but these new bleachers are aluminum. fans are excited they won't leave the game with then famous splinters in their seats anymore. some of the old wooden benches line the halls of the hall of fame. this looks like a restaurant but it's a field club. it's one three club where donors who paid thousands can get supreme seating and food. but all game-goers can enjoy the cuisine.

here's a look at mount tam. the official sunrise, 6:40. 7:38 is the son set. you know august, the coolest one since 1888 in reno. the warmest one was 9 degrees on average. 3.6 degrees cooler in san francisco for the month of august. we are looking at another cool summer locally where the warm weather, of course, encompassing much of the nation and the sierra nevada with the possibility of thunderstorms throughout perhaps next week in the mountains. today a nice, stable atmosphere. you can see that with the low clouds. the north and south, the delays at sfo over an hour and nine minutes due to the low ceiling. 54 at the airport. 57 in san carlos, 8 mile visibility. the marine layer is taller and it's moved to the east so it's not very dense. visibility pretty good along the coast. 58 in san jose. with the clouds, area of drizzle

and partly cloudy with below normal temperatures. once again today highs maxing out right around 80 today. tomorrow we will be close to the upper 80s and even perhaps some mid-and upper 90s by labor day. so the warming trend will be significant by tomorrow. here's a look at the cloud deck. you will notice by nine, ten o'clock the east bay valleys are sunny, but by 2:00 we are gray along the san mateo coast. and 5:00 in the afternoon, pacifica, half moon bay, still in the 50s with perhaps some 60s closer to the financial district. mainly lots of 70s today. notice how far you have to travel east and north to get into that warmer 80, orange degree range. but things will be quickly turning around as this area of low pressure, right now it's to the west of us. that's why we have the taller marine layer, the healthy on shore flow, the west wind about 21 by the delta. that's cooling into the

sacramento valley. even fresno not as hat, 92. 88 in los angeles. but big problems with the rib currents south of the bay around monterey and be careful if you are headed to the beaches down there. 60 in half moon bay. the milbrae art and wine festival, the 42nd one going on today there. and the sausalito art festival through labor day. 75 san jose with 67 in salinas. today maybe a couple degrees warmer than yesterday. a big warmup tomorrow, labor day. it will stay that way on tuesday and the cool down wednesday, thursday and friday. not bad out there. just a little cool to start out today. >> you are giving me an absolute lock, tomorrow in pet aluminum ma for the parade. it will be nice. >> thank you. >> no problem. tomorrow afternoon petaluma will honor its little league heroes with a 45 minute parade. they are going to be starting about 1:00. walnut park located at 4th and d streets.

look for individual players to be riding in convertible hot rods and classic cars. that should be a sight. there will be speeches, presentations and, of course, free hot dogs, courtesy of the little league sponsors. the team had a great run at the little league world series in williamsport, pennsylvania. ended up in third place in the entire world. last night they basked in the glow of the oakland coliseum stadium lights as they met with oakland a's stars. they ran out before the game. man, that had to feel about. confidence that took them all the way to the third place finish. they took fly balls during batting practice. how cool would that be? they enjoyed the game with the a's and enjoyed it from a luxury suite, compliments of a's player jonny gomes. >> now what's you have on "good

stanford squeaks by, 20-17, the final in the season opener. on to baseball. the a's hosted boston and petaluma last night, welcoming the petaluma little leaguers. the a's put on an offensive show, bludgeoning boston. before the game, dustin pedroia is measuring himself with 13-year-old bradley smith, who is 6'3" and towers over him. 1-0. the pride of petaluma, gomes, a base hit to bring in mos sufficient. kids loving that. moss is back and afile plates this ball. 8-1 a's in the sixth. former red sox george kottaras. he had two homers in the contest. 9-1, a's. no mercy rule in the majors. but boston needed it. another former sock josh reddick, grand slam in the seventh! the a's romp to their seventh straight win. 20-2. giants and cubs at wrigley field.

>> topping our news this half-hour, a ballot measure in the east bay are attracting some big money. in november richmond voters will decide whether it will become the first city in the nation to tax soda and other sugary drinks. here are the details. >> there are the slick direct mail advertisements urging voters to vote no on the tax. billboards have popped up arguing the tax would be bad for businesses, like this small grocery store. it's run by am recollection. >> if they raise the tax, a lot of customers aren't going to buy it anymore. >> this week an anti-tax commercial was filmed at casper's famous hot dogs and another is scheduled at the movie theater. it's the work of local political action group community coalition against beverage taxes which is getting major funding from the american beverage association. the group has spent more than $350,000 to stop the ballot measure.

a councilman who said the tax would hurt poor people and is happy for the help. >> so if you are trying to protect your community, do you turn down anybody that wants to help you? >> if approved, the cost of soda and other sugar-sweetend drinks would rise by one penny per ounce. that's the brainchild of a cardiologist. he said sugary drinks lead to serious childhood health problems and a tax would be a deterrent. his side has been outspent by more than 15-1. >> well, i think they should be frightened in that they think we are going to win. >> supporters of the tax say it would raise $3 million a year for childhood fitness programs if it can overcome the intensive ad campaign. >> it doesn't take a lot to sway people when you have a pretty sophisticated ad campaign like this one. but i do think that the pro tax measure is a good one and i hope it's successful. >> this weekend they are in philadelphia where they are scheduled to meet with the mayor there, getting advice on how to pass a soda tax, something that philadelphia has failed to do

twice. in richmond, john alston, abc7 news. >> iphones are increasingly popular among thieves. so popular that criminals are using violent and dangerous means to steal them. abc7 news reporter vic lee talks with one woman who industries -- industries the frightening assault she endured in san francisco all over an i-phone. >> it happened at kelly's tavern last friday shortly after mid-night. healthy sweeney was celebrating her birthday with about a dozen or more friends. it was packed with people dancing to a dj. >> we headed out to the dance floor and we were all kind of hanging out right in this area where we are now. >> sweeney went to check on their coats, which they left in the alcove. >> i felt like a large arm go around my rib cage. >> a man grabbed her arm and pulled it back sharply while female accomplices began grabbing at her jewelry. >> and they instantly were trying to rip my engagement ring off so i made a fist.

and that was right when i knew something really bad was happening. then they tried to rip my earrings out of my ear, gave a sharp like tug on my necklace, and then took my phone out of my back pocket, hit me in the face, a closed fist punch in the face. >> the punch blackened her eye and she fell to the ground dazed. it happened fast and the music was blaring, people were dancing. even though there were security guards here, no one saw what happened. >> so we came out here. >> after police were called, sweeney borrowed her friend's cell and they began tracking her stolen phone using her "find my phone" app. >> we tracked it and saw the phone on the map was already on lombard street. >> so they ran down lombard and on to steinert street. >> we ran two blocks up and they were in a vehicle and it was moving much faster than we were going to be going. >> police then picked up the chase, but the robbers killed the app on the stolen phone by

taking the sim card out. >> as soon as it got to u. n. plaza, we love the signal. >> here they sell them out-of-state, even mexico and asia. this is where people have also stepped up their reverse sting operation. >> they have the phone and they have to sell the phone to somebody and that's what we're going after, guys buying the phones. >> just to give you an idea how serious the robberies have become, in the last 24 hours in san francisco, there were 7 iphones and two laptops stolen, one from a man sitting on a port a potty, if you can imagine that. officers who patrol that area, u. n. plaza, the mid-market corridor, call it the new apple store or apple rack because it's become the most popular underground market where these smartphones are being sold. vic lee, abc7 news. >> the california legislature presented governor brown with a gift on his last day of the

session by presenting a new bill. a historic pension reform bill. the bill raises the retirement age of state employees, cuts benefits for new hires, and forces current employees to contribute more for benefits they already have. the measure could save the state as much at $55 billion but that's over the next 30 years a battle of words has erupted between new jersey governor chris christie and governor brown. it started monday when christie called brown an old retread, saying he couldn't believe california voters chose him over meg whitman. today brown said, it's gone. >> i have to tell you, i ran three miles in 29 minutes two nights ago. [applause] >> and i hereby challenge governor christie to a three mile race, a pushup contest, and a an chin-up contest! >>here's the picture of the governor last year doing pushups. well, we are assuming he's doing pushups. we don't see him doing it there, it's a still picture. but he's getting help from his dog. there's no response yet on that challenge from christie. we are a few days away from the democratic national convention being held in

charlotte, north carolina. karen traverse takes a look ahead to the dnc and why the stakes are so high for president obama and the nation. >> president obama has less than 70 days to convince voters to stay the course. >> that's why i am running for president. , president of the united states of america! >> democrats need to make the election a choice between president obama's plans for economic recovery and that of republicans. not a referendum on the president' record. >> president obama's theme to the election has been forward. that he will take the country forward. he has to actually show how he's going to do that. >> but with a struggling economy, that hasn't been easy. polls show that americans have grown increasingly frustrated with the president's handling of the economy and that's making this a very tight race. >> we know we still have a lot of work to do to get to where we need to be. but we are going to get there! >> next week in charlotte it will be up to democrats to tout the obama presidency. >> because my healthcare law, obamacare, you know, i call his plan romney doesn't care.

stayed at curry village at yosemite national park say this morning as many as 10,000 people could be exposed to the hantavirus. there have been six confirmed cases and two deaths. now an unprecedented numbers of cancellations as news of the disease spreads. the senate park service says they have been inundated with calls from people asking if they have been exposed to the virus. six people have been strict win the virus and two of those have died. lisa argen joins us now. a moment ago we were looking at the a clear look from the top of the mountain. over here you can see what might look at your place, certainly to the coast. it's overcast right now. >> we have the gray sky, we have airport delays over 1,000, 9 minutes. as we head toward emeryville, look at the gray there. uniform temperatures this morning, in the 50s. we are talking cool again today but now things are really going to change for the rest of your holiday weekend. i will have all the temperatures and looking at a big warmup next!

lake tahoe. what's the temperatures up there today? >> 70s. >> a fantastic time to be up there. 40s overnight? a chill in the air. certainly feels like fall up there. and in some people's minds, september is fall and here we are september 1st. more from lisa argen on that in a moment. there's a new speed sailing record just set on san francisco bay. take a look at the hydrotear. it reached a speed of 43.1 mile-an-hour during a mile nautical run yesterday off peer 39. look at that thing. it's a nine-story-high boat and it can go much better. it's been briefly clocked at 58 miles an hour, making it the world's fastest sailing boat. in the old days you used to talk about having a nice, relaxing sail. i don't think that would be a relaxes sail. i've been sailing on san francisco bay and we were nowhere close to those speeds, but it was kind of harry at times as the boatlifts and you

54 for you with 55 and pretty good visibility on our coast at half moon bay. so the marine layer is from about 1200 feet to over 3,000 feet. it will again to clear and we will see the sunshine in the east bay valleys maybe around 8:00, 9:00. then it works westward. but the clouds staying along the shoreline. just partly cloudy around the san mateo coast today with temperatures running as much as 10 degrees below average. 60s and 7 to -- 70s later today. the fog is starting to clear in the next couple hours, but it does get hung up by about the 2:00 hour. you will notice it's a close call around sausalito for the arts festival there, mid-60s. but for milbrae, more clouds throughout much of the day. 67 for a high for you. look at all those 80s out toward the sacramento valley. we have a delta breeze and that's allowing for the cool marine air to work its way into

the east of us and allowing for a respite into the valleys. but, boy, maybe you would like some summer warmth around here. it's on the way. here's the upper level trough that today is to the west of us and that's why we are so cool. but once it slides to the east, we get behind it and high pressure begins to build in from the south. so 79 degrees was the average temperature in reno for the entire month of august. and that is the all-time warmest august since 1888. so we've got warm temperatures in the sierra. the southern sierra 88, while the cool fog continues to linger from big sur and even in southern california, starting out with gray skies. 88 for los angeles later on today. 70 san mateo. so some afternoon sun shine here. a cool 60 half moon bay with 72 in vallejo. looks about 80 in livermore. so really about eight or nine degrees below where you should be. 77 in gilroy and afternoon sun in santa cruz at 69. so ten degrees of warming tomorrow.

>> the bay area's newest lottery millionaires are glad a relative watches more tv than they do. vladimir hit a $52 million mega millions jackpot in late july and they finally picked up their prize yesterday. they didn't even know they won they didn't know until they showed a surveillance camera on tv showing vlad buying the ticket. a relative saw it on tv and called with the big news. >> then i saw my picture, woke up my wife, and she goes, what? and then i said we are wanted.
